Fueling Your Day with a Good Breakfast

Sherpa Sense:

Not your Grandma’s oatmeal. Get thinking outside the bowl.

The majority of people need to consume good fuel in the morning. Why?  
  • For your brain to function, for your body to function, for your overall attitude towards life.  
  • Believe it or not, eating breakfast can help you manage your weight by preventing cravings.  Hmmm!
  • It’s a healthy habit that can jump start your metabolism for the day.

It’s your body and you only get one, what do you choose to put in it?

Let’s Yak:

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate when you wake up in the morning.  And not with soda or coffee. Your body needs water to operate efficiently and effectively.  You are dehydrated and have been fasting for hours when you wake up in the morning. What else does your body need?  It needs good sources of calcium, protein, carbs, grains, and fruits.

Ideas for protein/calcium:
  • Plain greek yogurt
  • Low fat cottage cheese
  • Peanut butter or powdered peanut butter for smoothies
  • Eggs or powdered egg whites for smoothies

Fruits: any kind is a great addition for breakfast and to add to a smoothie. Think about a red skinned apple for brain health, bananas for potassium, berries are fabulous in so many ways. Smoothies are great fuel when you use bananas, berries, yogurt and protein powder, plus jump start your greens by adding in some spinach or kale. 

Grains: are great but you want natural grains, no added sugar.  Add your own teaspoon of sugar if you must. It will be far less than what is added to the processed packages. Oatmeal – think about maple syrup to sweeten things up.

Carbs:  choose whole grain cereals or bread.  Read the label. Too much stuff you can’t pronounce? Less processed food is better food for you.  Let your body do the processing. It keeps you from feeling hungry while your body breaks down the food.  

Take a Hike:

Think about what you are putting into your body for your breakfast.  Is it sugar laden?  Most breakfast cereals are full of sugar (shoot for no more than 10g). So are pastries. Sugar is quickly absorbed but the crash brings you down fast, leaving you feeling worse. Not a good fuel. Read the label on prepared food.  What about leftover pizza? Actually not such a bad choice. Smoothies can be a fun “to go” breakfast food.  And see the above pic for some great ideas on jazzing up that old breakfast staple, Yum!

Yakety Yak:

So having talked about the virtues of eating breakfast, I have to mention that I have 2 children that simply could not put anything into their stomachs first thing in the morning.  I made sure they had something to drink and sent them off to school with good protein bars and a piece of fruit. #whatsamomtodo. So if this is you, make sure you pack something healthy to have when your stomach growls at you. 

FYI, a simple test for a processed food is to ask yourself if the ingredients in the list are something you could have at home or are there a bunch of chemicals names or additives that you can’t pronounce. #limitthese
